Owen looked up at me, he gave me a small wave. “I thought you weren’t going to show up.” He called over to me.
“I just woke up, it was a long day for me. You know nearly being eaten by raptors really makes a woman tired.” I laughed sitting down next to him.
He handed me a beer. “You’re going to be a wake for a while after sleeping that long.” He smiled as he continued to work on his bike.
“I should be fine.” I took a mouthful of beer. There was a silence. “How long have you worked here?”
“A while.” He answered.
I got up from my seat next to him and walked over to the waters edge. It was a beautiful view. “The island is beautiful at night.”
“It is.” Owen said quietly. He stood right behind me, I hadn’t heard him move. “I know that one of the restaurants stays open for the workers till one. We should go celebrate your first day of not being eaten.”
“Sure, sounds good but this isn’t a date.” I said as I followed him over to his bike.
He throws the helmet at me. “Whatever you say.” He winks at me as he gets on his bike.
The restaurant turns out to be quite nice and there are few workers there. Barry waves us over, Owen pulls me over to the group of men. I had seen them walking around the raptor paddock. They all smile at me.
“Hi raptor queen.” One of them laughs.
I look between Barry and Owen for an answer but they both shrug at me. Some use they are. I decide to ignore the comment.
“Drinks are on me tonight, want anything in particular you want?” Owen asked pulling his card from his wallet.
“Anything will be fine.” I don’t want to sound picky.
A few of the guys snicker at me. Barry throws them a look.
“What’s so funny?” I asked.
“You’re here for one day and Owen is already trying to get into your pants.” One laughed.
“I mean, he does that with all women though. Something about being a raptor trainer seems appealing to the ladies.” Another snickers.
“Both of you cut it out.” Barry said in a stern voice.
Both men shut up and took a seat somewhere else. Owen came back with two beers and handed me one.
“I got you beer because you didn’t seem like the cocktail kind of girl.” Owen smiled.
“You guessed right.” I couldn’t help but wonder if Owen was flirting with me just so he could get into my pants or he was just being friendly since I was new and the raptors didn’t eat me.
We spent the night laughing and drinking. I got to know Barry and Owen quite well. They were like brothers. Owen had to push his motorbike home since we were both pretty happy by the time we left. Living at the park didn’t seem as bad as I thought it would be.
I woke up in the morning with a thumping headache. The sun was glaring down in my face, it was going to be a long day. I got changed and dragged myself over to my four wheeler. I couldn’t find my painkillers and I thought I was going to die.
Owen walked out of his bungalow with a smile on his face. I glared at him and started the four wheeler up. The sound made me cringe.
“Good morning, (Y/N).” He called out to me happily.
I grumbled something and pulled my sunglasses down. He leant on my bike so I wasn’t able to go anywhere but I was in the mood where I didn’t care if I ran him over.
“How’s your head this morning?” He asked.
I shot him a look through my glasses. “Great, it feels like it’s going to explode.” I grumbled.
“I’m sure those painkillers will kick in you soon.” He patted my bike.
“I highly doubt that, I couldn’t find mine this morning. I still have a quite bit to unpack and I didn’t plan on getting drunk the first night here.” I groaned.
Owen pulled out a small box and threw it at me. “Take these, you are going to need them more than me.”
“Thanks, do you want anything in return for these?”
A grin grew on his face. “Can you cook?” He asked slyly.
“Sure, why is that?” I asked concerned.
“You can make dinner for me as payment.”
I placed a hand on my hip. “Oh, really? What makes you think I’m going to cook for you?” I asked.
“Because, well I took you out last night.” He said stumbling over his words.
“I hope you like oven back because that’s what is on the menu tonight.” I smiled before taking off.
Barry waved at me. “Morning, (Y/N). How are you this morning?” He asked.
“Sore head and I feel like last night’s beer is going to come back up. But apart from that I’m ready for work.”
He patted my back. “Good because you are going to be on high alert today. We are going to see if Blue reacts the same way to you.” Barry explained as he pushed me towards the raptor paddock.
“Wait, what happens if she doesn’t?” I asked a little concerned.
“Don’t worry, Owen will jump in if things get out of hand. Anyway you being closer to them will let you study them closer.”
I sighed and tried to relax. I had to go into the paddock and interact with them. There was no accidently falling in this time.
Owen stood on the catwalk over head. He called for the girls and they came running. They were quick. They stopped below him and chattered at each other. Barry opened the gate enough for me to get under it. My hands shook slightly, I knew the risks and I knew that Owen might not make it in time if something did go wrong.
I saw him throw a glance at me but then he went back to focusing on the girls. I stood up straight and walked away from the gate a little. Blue snapped her head round to look at me.
“Blue, focus on me.” Owen called out.
Blue ignored him and made her way over to me. Her sisters watched, they ignored Owen. Blue stood in front of me, she sniffed me. I slowly put my hand out and she watched me carefully.
“Hey, Blue.” I said trying to stop my voice from shaking.
She made a noise at me and I froze. She moved forward and put her head under my hand and leant into it. I relaxed up a little. Echo was the next to investigate me. She rubbed up against me, pushing me a little. Delta nudged Blue out of the way and nuzzled my hand. I looked up and saw Charlie watching me.
“You’re doing great.” Barry called out to me.
“I hope so.” I laughed nervously. “How long did it take for you guys to be able to do this?” I asked watching Charlie.
There was silence. I moved my gaze away from Charlie and looked over my shoulder. Barry gave me a weak smile and Owen moved awkwardly.
“We haven’t done this before, you are the first to get this close to them.” Owen said.
I looked at them wide eyed. “What? I thought you let me so they could get used to me. I honestly thought that you guys could do this as well.”
Charlie pushed against me with the side of her head. I stumbled away from the group of raptors. I backed up to the gate and Echo followed me over and leant up against me. She was heavy. She made a chattering noise and looked at me as though I could understand her.
“We should have told you, no one has been this close to them without being eaten.” Barry explained.
Owen put his hand on my shoulder. “But don’t panic, they seem to like you. At least your studying will be easier.” He laughed.
Echo snapped at his hand and Owen quickly retracted it. A car pulled up and the raptors scattered. I turned and watched Claire get out of the car and walk over to the paddock.
“Hi Claire.” I called out.
Her face dropped as she saw me in the paddock. She rushed over to the bars of the safety gate. “What are you doing in there (Y/N)? You realise those things can kill you.” She said frantically.
I nodded. “I do realise but somehow these two forgot to mention that no one has been this close to them. I thought it was okay to be in here until a few moments ago.” I shot a glare at Owen and Barry.
Blue came back over to me and rested her head on my shoulder. I could see that she was watching the others. Claire looked like she was about to pass out.
“Don’t worry, (Y/N) is in good hands.” Owen said.
Claire gave him a dirty look. “She fell in the paddock yesterday, I heard you took her out last night and both got drunk and now she is in the paddock with a raptors head on her shoulder.” Claire snapped angrily. “She is not in good hands. If I see her in that paddock again by herself, someone is going to lose their job.” Claire turned on her heel and stormed away.
Owen mouthed wow to Barry and me. “She seems to be in a good mood today.” He said quietly.
I nodded. Blue nudged my head and made a noise. I looked at her, it was still a little concerning having something this big and carnivorous next to me.
“Maybe it’s time I get out. I need to write some things down.”
Owen nodded and moved back up to the cat walk. He called to them, Blue made a noise at me before moving her concertation onto Owen.
I ducked under the gate and I felt like I could breathe properly again.
Sorry its taken so long, I've been busy. Enjoy
